Module 5
Even though I sort of struggled my way though Module 5, I did really enjoy the material that we worked through. I firmly believe that physical literacy is such an important skill that needs to be fostered from a young age, as it becomes harder to grasp and obtain as we age. I have trainer elderly individual, professional athletes, and the hardest client I had to train as a personal trainer was a 12 year old girl who had no concept of how to recognize how her body was moving in space and was so physically illiterate that she was unable to grasp the concept of tucking her chin to role her body over her head to be able to do a summersault. I found this very heart breaking to see and it is something that I have taken on, as I guess I could say a personal inquiry quest with my students as a means of ensuring they are being encouraged to remain active into adulthood.
The work we did on understanding Teaching Games for Understanding, and making sure that all our students, special needs students included, are actively encouraged to participate in class. When our students come to us, there might be somewhere around 25-30% ish of the class who are fully physically literate, and the remainder is a mix of students who are not physically literate and some who are somewhat physically literate. And of all the students, regardless of their physical literacy levels, not all of them will have the capacity to fully grasp athletic game play and strategy. That is where TGfU comes in to play, and it was through these readings and work that helped me to further my understanding of just how important they are to help provide the scaffolding needed for each of the students to understand the concept of game play and strategy, but also for those who it will come easier to to have the opportunity to practice their leadership roles.
I think for myself, one of the biggest takeaways for me is the article that we read on 21st Century Competencies. I found this a really interesting and relative article to read. There was so much valuable information that it is hard for me to break down a few discussion points for this summery, however it is a piece of my learning that is going to be influencing my teaching practices for a long time. I found that this helped to deepen my understand on why making sure the students voices are represented and that we are taking a more experiential approach to our practices. In addition, it is the main sources of information that helped to solidify a foundation for how I will look to adapt and continue to approach my teaching on moulding my students into lifelong learners, and I know how beneficial it will be for them to fully understand. The majority of the careers that our students are going to venture in to will require them to maintain and continuously update their education and credentials so by teaching the students to understand the value in this early will help them to recognize the value in it as them move forward into adulthood.
